Even customers who have heard many positive things about floor heating mats wonder about the advantages and drawbacks of this form of heating. In short, the major factors to consider when making a purchasing decision about this system are:

1) Surface area. If you have a radiator, baseboard heater, or heating vents, the relatively small surface of these heaters has to heat the entire room surface. With radiant floor heat, though, the entire floor becomes a heating element, making this heating system far more effective. You can often set the temperature a few degrees lower and still enjoy great comfort and warmth.

4) Flexibility. Today, radiant floor heat systems are not just for floors anymore. You can buy heating mats and products for heating the tile walls in the shower, for defogging the bathroom mirror, for snow clearing your sidewalk and driveway, for heating your shower seat, and much more.

5) Flooring. Consider your flooring when you buy floor heating systems. Radiant floor heat works well with concrete, wood floors, tiles and laminate flooring. It also works well with carpet, but the insulation under the carpeting may not allow your room to heat up as much.

6) Goals. What are the goals for your home? Consider this before making any changes to your heating system. If you are looking for a heating system that can save you money, can give you better air quality, can expose you to less EMF radiation, can lead to better comfort, and can give you a more efficient and environmentally-friendly form of heating, then radiant heat may be right for you. However, if you want to have a traditional heating system or you don’t want to replace your flooring or access your flooring from the ceiling up, then you may not want radiant heat.
